Local by design

Privacy at Findit.

Findit searches files on your Mac without sending your filenames, indexed content, or search queries to a search service. The app has no account system, telemetry, analytics backend, or cloud sync.

What stays on your Mac

File names, indexed paths, recently opened paths, ranking counts, and settings are stored locally. Search queries are not saved as a persistent history. If you enable content or semantic indexing, extracted text and search vectors are also stored locally. Optional clipboard history and snippets stay on your Mac.

You choose what to index

Manage folders and exclusions in Settings. Full Disk Access is optional. Content indexing, semantic search, clipboard history, hidden files, and retained offline-volume history are opt-in. Indexing and previews do not automatically download cloud-only file bodies; explicitly opening a file may ask macOS to download it.

When network connections happen

The release updater connects to the configured update host to check for and download new versions. The optional semantic-model download contacts Stanford only when you request it. If you choose a web-search fallback, Findit opens your query in the selected search provider. These services receive the ordinary network request, including your IP address.

Plugins are optional local executables you choose to enable. They can access selected paths and the query supplied to them. Their behavior is determined by their code.

Developer identity and release files

Public releases are signed with Developer ID and notarized by Apple. A Developer ID signature includes the developer account’s legal identity; it is not an anonymous signature. App packages do not include a developer’s search index, settings, clipboard history, personal documents, or signing credentials.

Deleting local data

Use Clear History in Settings to clear recent-item and suggestion history. To remove all Findit data, quit the app, remove Findit from Applications, and delete the Findit folder under ~/Library/Application Support. Remove ~/Library/Preferences/app.findit.macos.plist to reset macOS preferences.
